Nashville --- The Tennessee State
University softball team dropped both
games of Wednesday evening's doubleheader against Western
Kentucky at Tiger Field.
Tennessee State fell to Western Kentucky
3-2 in game one before suffering a 9-0 loss in game two.
TSU fell to 17-22 while WKU improved to 24-12 on the season.
In game one, an early solo homerun gave Western
Kentucky a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
TSU evened the score 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Nichole
Vincent led the inning off with a single to left field before advancing to
second on a sacrifice bunt from Tamara Perkins.
Jennifer Culberson singled up the middle and Vincent
advanced to third. On the ensuing play, Culberson stole second base and Vincent
scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
In the fourth, a lead off double by Caitlin Eaton coupled
with a hit up the middle by Royesha Goodman led to TSU scoring and taking a 2-1
lead.
WKU came back to tie the game 2-2 in the sixth before
scoring the eventual game winning run in the top of the seventh.
The Tigers tallied seven hits in the game but left nine
runners stranded on base in the game. Caitlin Eaton (11-10) was charged with
the loss while Nichole Vincent was 2-for-2 at the plate. Bridget Metzger also
tallied two hits for TSU.
In game two, TSU committed five errors and only registered
three hits in the contest.
TSU fell behind early as WKU built its lead up to 6-0 by the
third inning. The Tigers never recovered as the Hilltoppers went on to win 9-0.
Melanie Cruz, Tamara Perkins and Nichole Vincent each
recorded hits in the game. Megan Hedrick (3-11) was tagged with the loss.
The Tigers return to action this weekend with a series
against conference opponent Eastern Kentucky.
Game one of Saturday's doubleheader will kick off at 1 p.m. while Sunday's
single game is slated to begin at 12 p.m. at Tiger Field.
