Nashville --- The Tennessee State
University softball team dropped both
games of a doubleheader against Southeast Missouri
on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
TSU (18-28, 8-14 OVC) suffered a 9-1 loss in game one before
dropping a 4-3 decision to SEMO (26-19, 15-8 OVC) in game two.
On the day, TSU hit .133 and tallied six hits. Bridget
Metzger and Brittany Webb led TSU with two hits apiece. Webb and Metzger
combined for all three of TSU's RBIs.
In game one, Southeast Missouri's
Giana Zimmerman (16-8) held the Tigers to just one hit and one run while
throwing 12 strikeouts and only yielding three walks.
The Tigers threatened to score early as they were able to
load the bases with no outs in the first inning. Zimmerman, however, retired three
consecutive batters to get out of the inning unscathed.
The Redhawk bats came alive in the top of the third as SEMO
scored five runs off of five hits in the inning.
TSU answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to get on
the board but it wouldn't be enough as SEMO went on to add four more runs in
the top of the sixth to make the score 9-1. After the Tigers went down in order
in the bottom of the frame, the game ended due to the mercy rule.
Caitlin Eaton (12-13) was tagged with the loss while
Brittany Webb was 1-of-2 at the plate with one RBI.
The second game saw SEMO capture a 3-0 lead in the second
inning behind two hits and one TSU error. In the bottom of the third however,
Bridget Metzger knocked a solo homerun over the left field wall that sparked a
TSU comeback.
The Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and
another in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at 3-3.
SEMO, however, capitalized on a lead off triple and a wild
pitch to reclaim the lead, 4-3, in the top of the sixth.
The Redhawks were able to hold on for the win, as the next
six TSU batters went down in order.
Megan Hedrick (3-13) picked up the loss while Bridget
Metzger went 2-for-3 at the plate and tallied an RBI.
TSU returns to Tiger Field tomorrow for the final home game
of the season in the conclusion of the three-game series against Southeast Missouri at 1 p.m.
The single game will be recognized as Senior Day.
