Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team
used a fourth inning spurt to capture an 8-4 win over Belmont in game one
before defeating the Bruins, 8-7, in extra innings in the second game.
With the win, Tennessee
State (5-10) snaps Belmont's (2-16) three game win streak over
the Tigers.
TSU recorded a batting average of .288 over both games with
a .411 slugging percentage. The Tigers finished the day with 15 hits, including
six doubles as well as 12 RBI.
Brittany Webb (.500) connected on 3-of-6 at the plate and
led the team with three RBI and three doubles. Jalisa Bradley (2-of-4) turned
in a couple of doubles and crossed the plate three times.
A lead-off double by Jalisa Bradley coupled with a single by
Jill Gardner a few batters later gave TSU an early 1-0 lead in game one.
Belmont
answered in the top of the fourth with four runs to go ahead 4-1 but the lead
would be short lived.
In the bottom of the fourth, 12 Tigers came up to bat as TSU
rallied for seven runs in the frame behind four hits and a number of Belmont miscues.
Jalisa Bradley and Katie Jordan reached after they each were
hit by a pitch. Brooke Blackford then singled to bring Bradley home. The next
batter, Jill Gardner, was also hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Tamara Perkins came up to
bat. Perkins got on base with a walk, which brought in another run and prompted
a pitching change. The Tigers, however, tacked on five more runs before the inning
ended.
The Tiger pitching held the Belmont offense in check the rest of the way.
Hannah Schnebly (3-3) picked up the win for TSU. She pitched 3.2 innings and
only allowed two hits and a walk. TSU tallied nine hits in the contest.
In game two, TSU seemed to have the game in hand before Belmont fought back to
tie the score and force extra innings.
TSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead and increased the advantage to
5-0 after posting three runs in the third.
Belmont
finally got on the board in the top of the fourth with three runs but TSU
answered in the bottom of the fifth with a run to maintain a 6-3 cushion.
The Bruins, however, rallied for two runs in the sixth
before knotting the score, 6-6, with another run in the top of the seventh.
TSU was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh and the
game went into extra innings. Each team scored one run in the eighth inning but
Caitlin Eaton retired three straight Belmont
batters in the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Hill advanced to third following
a sacrifice bunt from Tamara Perkins. She later scored the game winning run
when Brooke Blackford batted her in.
Caitlin Eaton (1-4) earned the win for TSU while Bridget Metzger recorded her fifth career and first triple of the season.
The Tigers will return to action this weekend when they kick
off Ohio Valley Conference play against Murray State
on Saturday. First game is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Tiger Field.
