Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball team
dropped both contests of a doubleheader against Tennessee Tech Saturday
afternoon at Tiger Field.
Tennessee State failed to cross the plate in either game and
sank to 10-27 (5-11 OVC) while Tennessee Tech improved to 18-24 (7-9 OVC).
TSU combined for seven hits in the doubleheader and turned in a
.146 batting average. Bridget Metzger and Brittany Webb each tallied two hits
for the Tigers.
Game One
After two scoreless innings from both teams, Tennessee Tech
captured a 3-0 lead in the third before increasing the advantage to
4-0 in the fifth.
Meanwhile, the Tiger offense continued to struggle. TSU only
managed four hits against TTU starter Maddi Schmissrauter and two hits against
relief pitcher Whitney Cummings.
The Tigers threatened in the top of the sixth after a lead-off
single and a walk put runners on first and second with no outs. The next three
batters, however, went down in order to thwart the TSU rally.
In the top of the seventh, Tech used five hits to score four
more runs and swell the lead to 8-0.
Katie Jordan singled through the left side to get on base in
the bottom of the frame but she would eventually be left stranded on base.
TSU had six hits and two errors in the game while TTU poured
in 11 hits and didn't commit any errors.
Schmissrauter (6-7) picked
up the win for Tech was Caitlin Eaton (2-11) was charged with the loss for TSU.
Game two
Similar to the first game, the contest was scoreless through
the first two innings. Tennessee Tech jumped on top 1-0 when Channelle Spalding
hit a homerun to right center.
Tennessee State got its first hit of the game in the fifth inning
on a single by Bridget Metzger down the right field line but she would be left
stranded on base.
Tech added another run in the seventh to head in to the
bottom of the frame leading, 2-0. TSU got a runner on base in the bottom of the
seventh but was unable to forge a comeback.
Megan Hedrick fell to 3-6 while Holly Thomas (9-11) earned
the win for the Golden Eagles.
The series will conclude tomorrow at noon at Tiger Field.
