Nashville --- The Tennessee State University softball
dropped an, 8-3, decision to Jacksonville State before falling, 3-1, in game
two.
Tennessee State fell to 7-24 (1-7 OVC) while Jacksonville
State improved to 21-6 and remained undefeated (8-0) in league play.
Game One
Kelly Troglin (2-7) was charged with the loss for TSU while
Tiffany Harbin (13-4) picked up the win for JSU.
For the Tigers, Tedra Alford went 2-for-3 at the plate with
a double while Brittany Webb recorded her third homerun of the season and
tallied two RBI.
Abbey Stepp and Krystal Ruth were 3-for-4 to lead
Jacksonville State while Kristin Graham notched a homerun. Sallie Beth turned
in a team-best three RBI.
The Gamecocks pounded out 17 hits while the Tigers only
managed three hits. Neither team committed an error as TSU stranded five
runners on base and JSU left nine.
Jacksonville State grabbed an early, 1-0, lead after Kristin
Graham hit a solo homerun to centerfield in the opening frame.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Tigers loaded the
bases behind two walks and a hit-by-pitch. TSU, however, was not able to
capitalize.
The Gamecocks went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second when
two-out blooper near the left field line drove in a run from second.
TSU struggled with JSU's starting pitcher Tiffany Harbin
initially as she recorded nine strikeouts through the first three innings.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the third frame after
Brittany Webb hit a two-run homer to left center to pull TSU even, 2-2.
Jacksonville State regained the lead, 5-2, in the next
inning with three runs before another run in the fifth made visitors' the
advantage, 6-2.
Two more runs in the top of the seventh made JSU's lead,
8-2, before TSU scored a run in the bottom of the frame to make the final
score, 8-3.
Game Two
Jacksonville State got on the board first with a run in the
top of the fourth but Tennessee State answered in the bottom of the frame when
Katye Brown scored from second on a hit by Jasmine Dunston.
In the same inning, the Tigers loaded the bases when Shanika
Johnson got hit by a pitch but Kristin Graham retired the next batter to get
out of the inning without TSU scoring anymore runs.
JSU jumped back on top, 3-1, after scoring two runs in the
top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kelly Troglin reached base on
a walk before Jalisa Bradley was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and
second. The Tigers were unable to mount a comeback as both runners were left
stranded on base.
Caitlin Eaton (4-10) was charged with the loss while Kristin
Graham (3-0) picked up the win. Ashley Eliasson earned the save for
Jacksonville State.
Tennessee State finished the game with four hits and one
error while Jacksonville State tallied five hits and one miscue.
The Tigers return to action this weekend at Eastern
Illinois. Game one of the three-game series is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
