Brumfield and Chichester Lead Flying Tigers to 4th Place OVC Finish

MURRAY, Ky. — R'Lazon Brumfield and Zavante Chichester each won gold medals to lead the Tennessee State University Flying Tigers to a fourth place finish in the 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

As a team, the Flying Tigers finished with 87 team points good enough for a fourth place finish. Southeast Missouri won the team championship with 241 points, followed by Eastern Illinois (236) and Belmont (113) in second and third, respectively. Behind the Flying Tigers were UT Martin (fifth - 80), SIUE (sixth - 48) and Morehead State (seventh - 5). 

In the triple jump, the Flying Tigers finished 1-2 with a dynamic performance by Brumfield (16.12m) and Keandric Verge (14.97m). 

The Flying Tigers got a podium finish from Michael Thompson in the 400m finals as he placed second in 47.68. Thompson earned eight points for his team. Thomson was edged out in the final few meters by EIU's Ricky Thompson. Morgan Jones came in sixth (50.02 - three points). 

Chichester's win in the 110m hurdles — 14.31 – was three-tenths of a second ahead of SIUE's Kevyere Mack. Chichester added 10 points for TSU. Kiyanote Warren finished fifth (14.83 - four points). 

Warren then added to TSU's podium appearances with a third-place performance in the 400m hurdles in 53.57 (six points). Warren was just 0.4 seconds behind Brock Wood of SEMO. Hasani Williams (56.62 - two points)  finished seventh. 

The Flying Tigers placed second in the 4x100m relay in 41.52 (eight points). The group consisted of Amari Jelks, Kiyontae Warren, Aristotle Huffman and Marius Steward

TSU got another second-place finish in the 4x400m relay with Michael Thompson, Morgan Jones, Kiyontae Warren and Thaddee Barge completing the race in 3:15.49 (eight points)

In the 100m finals, Marius Steward (11.02), Amari Jelks (11.03) and Aristotle Huffman (11.07) finished fifth, sixth, and seventh. The trio gained eight team points for TSU. 

In the 200m finals., Steward finished fifth (22.27) and gained four points for the Flying Tigers. Brumfield finished seventh in the race in 26.49 (two points). 

In the long jump, Verge finished sixth with a mark of 6.82m.
