Track and Field Set for Georgia Tech Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee State track and field program continues its outdoor season this weekend as the Tigers travel to Atlanta, Ga., to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational, hosted by Georgia Tech at George C. Griffin Track on April 17–18.

The two-day collegiate meet features heats-against-time finals and strong NCAA competition, giving Tennessee State another opportunity to post qualifying marks and build momentum as the postseason approaches.

LAST TIME OUT

Tennessee State enters the weekend following an impressive performance at the Ole Miss Classic, highlighted by multiple podium finishes and personal-best performances.

Junior sprinter Caleb Joshway led the Tigers with a fourth-place finish in the 100 meters (10.42) and third place in the 200 meters (21.45). Senior Serenity Harry paced the women's sprint squad with a 12.01 performance in the 100 meters and a top-10 finish in the 200 meters.

The hurdle group continued its strong outdoor campaign as Kylen Thorps ran a personal-best 53.32 to place second in the 400-meter hurdles, while Bobby Teixeira and Brian Townsend each clocked 14.65 in the 110-meter hurdles.

In middle distance action, Robert Hooper recorded a runner-up finish in the 800 meters with a personal-best 1:51.21, and Devin Jones added a personal-best 47.72 in the 400 meters.

Field events also produced strong results, led by Jonathan Wade, who cleared 2.00m in the high jump and placed third in the long jump. Carolyn McRee highlighted the throws group with a personal-best 38.96m in the discus.

MEET SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS

Competition begins Friday with a full slate of field and distance events before continuing Saturday with relays and sprint finals.

Friday Events (April 17)

  • Hammer Throw begins at 11:00 a.m.
  • Women's 100m hurdles — 5:00 p.m.
  • Men's 110m hurdles — 5:30 p.m.
  • Women's & Men's 100m — starting at 6:00 p.m.
  • 1500 meters, steeplechase and 5000-meter races throughout the evening
  • Long jump, javelin, pole vault and shot put competitions

Saturday Events (April 18)

  • Senior Recognition — 11:00 a.m.
  • 4x100-meter relays begin at 12:00 p.m.
  • 400m hurdles and 400m races early afternoon
  • 800 meters and 200 meters competition
  • Meet concludes with the 4x400-meter relays

The meet will not be team scored, allowing athletes to focus on season-best performances, NCAA qualifying marks and late-season development.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Tennessee State will rely on depth across all event groups:

  • Sprints & Relays: Joshway and Harry headline a fast sprint squad looking to improve times against elite competition.
  • Hurdles: Thorps and the Tigers' hurdle unit aim to continue strong performances after multiple top finishes last weekend.
  • Middle Distance: Hooper leads the distance group entering another competitive 800-meter field.
  • Field Events: Wade and the jumpers, along with Pugh and the throws group, continue trending upward with recent personal records.

The Georgia Tech Invitational serves as a key late-season tune-up as the Tigers prepare for the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships.
