NASHVILLE — This weekend, the Tennessee State University Tigers softball team (4-0) looks to build on their best start since 2008 as they will host the Roar City Classic (February 18-19 Tiger Field). The classic will be the Tigers' home opener, featuring games against Alabama A&M, Bradley University, and the University of North Alabama.
"We are excited to host the Roar City Classic," said Tiger head coach
Genee McRath. "We played solid last weekend, so it's time to build on the momentum. Great competition is coming in. We are looking for some good games to be played."
Two TSU players earned weekly honors from the Ohio Valley Conference this week. Freshman catcher
Onnika Spencer was Named OVC Player of the Week, and
Caitlyn Manus was named Pitcher of the Week. Spencer batted .286 for the weekend. Her grand slam and eight RBIs were critical to the Tigers' 12-2 win over Alcorn State. Manus went 3-0 on the mound, completing two games. She finished the weekend with a 1.86 ERA.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS:
The Tigers finished last season with a 15-39 record. They are picked to finish eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference this year. OF
Marisa Mauroschadt is coming off two shoulder surgeries and will be counted on heavily to lead her team with her speed and arm from the outfield.
Caitlyn Manus and
Holly Ayala will be the top pitchers on the team. Another player to watch will be
Nahtali Simpson.
SCOUTING ALABAMA A&M
Alabama A&M went 2-1 last weekend in the River City Classic, defeating Grambling State (9-4), Xavier of Louisiana (7-5), and losing to Alcorn State (12-5). A&M is looking for big things out of sophomore Allyson Riches. Last season, she played in 38 games finishing with a batting average of .370, an on-base percentage of .440, slugging of .490, 18 runs, ten doubles, a triple, and 23 RBIs. She was the only A&M player to be named to the SWAC First Team this preseason.
SCOUTING BRADLEY
Bradley has started the season at 1-4. Preseason All Missouri Valley Conference player Grace French is leading the team in hitting average at .500. The versatile French is also the top returning pitcher from last year when she earned a 3.18 ERA. Top hitter from last year, Abbott Badgley, joined French with preseason honors.
SCOUTING NORTH ALABAMA
North Alabama's pitching staff has started the season throwing two no-hitters in their three-game series against Mississippi Valley State. The team batted .494 for the series. Hailey Jones smacked two home runs and batted in seven. The sevens continued to be wild as Sidney Bevis went a perfect seven for seven at the plate with seven RBIs.
