Flying Tigers Finish in Second Place in First Outdoor Meet of Season

ATLANTA. – Competing in their first outdoor event of the season, the Tennessee State men's track and field team came in 2nd place out of 10 teams this weekend as they competed in the Morehouse Relays.
 
The Flying Tigers tallied 185 for their two-day score while racking up five first-place finishes in the meet.
 
Starting off with the running events, Amari Jelks earned a 6th-place finish in the 200m dash after clocking a 22.64. Quest Agee would take home 5th in the 400m dash with a 50.53, followed by Nigel Simon Jr., who was one place back in 6th with a 50.53.
 
Robert Hooper had a successful weekend for the Flying Tigers as he finished in 1st place in the 1500m run with a time of 4:07.81, while he logged a 2nd place finish in the 800m run with a time of 1:56.62.
 
In the hurdle events, Thurman McMullen finished in 2nd place in the 110m hurdles with a 14.66. Zavante Chichester finished one spot back in 3rd place with a 14.72, while Israel Fayne finished in 6th place after clocking a 16.45.
 
McMullen would follow up his 110m hurdle performance with a 1st place finish in the 400m hurdles after clocking a 55.24. Chichester would claim 7th in the event with a 1:00.70.
 
In the relay events, TSU had its 4x200 relay team and 4x100 relay team log second-place finishes. The 4x200 team consisted of Quest Agee, Jeremiah Lewis, Nigel Simon Jr, and Thurman McMullen, as they finished with a 1:29.86. The 4x400 team clocked a 3:15.55, led by Agee, Lewis, Simon Jr, and McMullen.
 
Jon'Terio Horton did what he usually does in the high jump, taking home 1st place with a leap of 6'6.
 
The Tigers had three athletes earn top-5 finishes in the long jump, led by Anthony Ward who took home 2nd place after finishing with a 6.85m jump. Keandric Verge finished one spot back in 3rd place with a 6.79m leap, while David Dorsey was one spot back in 4th place, also with a 6.79m jump.
 
The Flying Tigers ran away with the triple jump, taking home 1st place, 2nd, and 3rd in the event. Verge paced the group with a first-place finish after finishing with a 14.83. Dorsey was one spot back in 2nd place with a 14.52, while Kenyon Johnson took home 3rd place after logging a 14.41m.
 
Jarius Stewart led TSU in the shot put with a 2nd place finish after tossing his shot put 12.72m. Justin Biggs finished one spot back in 5th place with a toss of 12.59m.
 
In the discus throw, Forrest Saffo led the way with a 4th-place finish with a toss of 39.17. Stewart came in 6th after finishing with a 38.44m throw.
 
Saffo had a great performance in the hammer throw as he came in 1st place with a 48.15m. Nicholas Wright finished with a 44.76m throw to finish in second place. Stewart finished in 5th place with a 38.57.
 
TSU will be back in action on April 6-8 as they are set to head to Athens, Ga., to compete in the Specs Town and Torrin Lawrence Invitational.
