HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Tennessee State men's track and field team delivered impressive performances at the James Madison University Invite on Saturday afternoon. The Flying Tigers tallied four individual first-place finishes, while two relay teams also took home first place.
In the men's 100 meters,
Amari Jelks finished in third place with a time of 11.07, while his teammate
Anthony Ward finished in fifth place with a time of 11.16.
Jelks also competed in Men's 200 meters and finished in sixth place with a time of 22.32 with a wind of 0.7, followed by
Nigel Simon Jr.,
Quest Agee, and
Evan Echols who finished in eighth, ninth, and tenth place respectively.
In the Men's 400 meters, Simon Jr. finished in third place with a time of 49.68, followed by Agee who finished in fourth place with a time of 49.74. Echols,
Maurice Pridgen, and
Robert Hooper finished in sixth, seventh, and eighth place respectively.
Hooper showed an outstanding performance in Men's 800 meters, winning first place with a time of 1:57.00, followed by
Thaddee Barge who finished in third place with a time of 1:58.08.
In the Men's 1500 meters,
Sunny Quinn finished in sixteenth place with a time of 4:22.65.
Thurman McMullen showcased his hurdling skills by winning first place in Men's 110 hurdles with a time of 14.24, followed by
Zavante Chichester who finished in fourth place with a time of 14.78. In the Men's 400 hurdles, McMullen finished in second place with a time of 54.77, followed by Chichester who finished in fifth place with a time of 59.89.
Tennessee State's relay teams also demonstrated great performance. In the Men's 4 x 100 Relay, Tennessee St.'s team composed of Jelks, Agee, Ward, and McMullen won first place with a time of 41.94. In the Men's 4 x 400 Relay, Tennessee St.'s team A composed of McMullen, Hooper, Simon Jr., and Agee won first place with a time of 3:19.82, while their team B composed of Echols, Pridgen, Chichester, and Barge finished in fourth place.
TSU secured impressive results in the Men's High Jump, Men's Long Jump, Men's Triple Jump, Men's Shot Put, and Men's Hammer events in today's competition.
Jon'Terio Horton and
Keandric Verge both placed first in the Men's High Jump and Men's Long Jump events, respectively, with Horton clearing 1.95 meters and Verge jumping 7.12 meters.
Verge also won the Men's Triple Jump event with a distance of 15.25 meters, followed by
Kenyon Johnson at 14.57 meters, Horton at 14.41 meters, and Ward at 13.94 meters.
In the Men's Shot-Put event,
Justin Biggs placed third with a throw of 13.77 meters, while Jairus Stewart finished seventh with a throw of 12.66 meters.
In the Men's Discus, Jairus Stewart finished fourth with a distance of 39.62 meters, while
Garrison Holland placed seventh with a distance of 35.92 meters, and
Nicholas Wright finished eighth with a distance of 35.50 meters.
Biggs and Stewart placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Men's Hammer event, with Biggs recording a distance of 42.80 meters and Stewart recording a distance of 39.92 meters.
The Flying Tigers will be back in actio April 28-29 as they are set to compete in the Music City Challenge at Vanderbilt.
