NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State men's tennis team returns to action Wednesday afternoon as the Tigers travel across town to face Vanderbilt at 12 p.m. in Nashville.
TSU enters the matchup looking to bounce back after a pair of road losses last week against UAB and Memphis, with both matches ending by identical 6–1 scores. Despite the results, the Tigers showed flashes of competitiveness at the top and middle of the lineup.
Senior Taj Hibbert delivered a statement win at No. 1 singles against UAB, battling through two tight sets to earn a 7–6, 7–5 victory. Against Memphis, Chris Bogelin picked up TSU's lone point with a gritty performance at No. 5 singles, securing a 7–5, 6–1, 10–6 win in a deciding super tiebreak.
Wednesday's contest marks another challenging test for the Tigers, as Vanderbilt has historically had the upper hand in the series. TSU has faced the Commodores 10 times since 2016, all in Nashville, with the most recent meeting resulting in a 6–1 loss during the 2023–24 season. The Tigers earned a point in that match, continuing a trend of competitive individual courts despite the overall results.
Series History vs. Vanderbilt (since 2016):
-
Last meeting: Jan. 17, 2024 – L, 6–1
-
TSU has earned points in two of the last three meetings (2022, 2024)
-
All matchups have been played in Nashville
With early-season lineups still taking shape, Wednesday's match offers TSU an opportunity to gain experience against a strong in-state opponent and build momentum heading deeper into the spring schedule.
First serve is set for 12 p.m. at Vanderbilt.
