Rooted in Faith, Fueled by Purpose: Gabe Deng’s Journey to TSU

For Gabriel Deng, the path to Tennessee State didn't begin with lifelong dreams of track stardom. It began with curiosity, opportunity, and a willingness to try something new.

A native of Springfield, Tennessee, Deng describes himself as a "country boy at heart," shaped by close ties to friends and family and the values instilled in him growing up. That foundation has followed him to TSU, where he's balancing the demands of Division I track with a rigorous nursing major — all while keeping his faith at the center of everything he does.

Deng didn't start track until March of his senior year of high school, but it didn't take long for the sport to click. What began as an experiment quickly turned into a defining chapter of his life. One of his proudest moments came early, placing at the state meet in his first year — a performance that helped open the door to competing at the collegiate level.

"When I first started, I just had a great experience," Deng said. "Track gave me an opportunity I didn't expect."

That opportunity ultimately led him to Tennessee State, where the decision felt right on multiple levels. The proximity to family, the strength of TSU's nursing program, and the support of the track coaching staff made the choice an easy one.

Since arriving in Nashville, Deng has seen the most growth in his form and technique — a result of consistent work and the guidance of TSU's coaching staff and teammates. He credits prayer as a major part of his preparation, grounding him before competition and keeping him focused beyond the results.

Off the track, Deng is as multifaceted as they come. When he's not training or studying, you might find him horse riding, playing guitar, reading, or talking basketball — the sport he says he'd pursue if track wasn't part of his life. His playlist ranges from classical to Arabic music, and his favorite TV show? Dragon Ball.

Being part of TSU Track means more to Deng than just competition.

"It's awesome," he said simply, pointing to the camaraderie of the Jump Squad and the joy of hanging out with teammates as some of his favorite memories so far.

Looking ahead, Deng's vision stretches far beyond the track. He hopes to work in the medical field and one day spread God's word in Africa — a goal rooted deeply in his faith and desire to serve others.

If teammates had to sum him up in one word, Deng hopes it would be "kind." It's a fitting description for an athlete whose journey is defined not just by growth in performance, but by purpose, humility, and heart.

At TSU, Gabe Deng continues to build — as an athlete, a student, and a person — running toward a future driven by faith, service, and opportunity.
