Track and Field Takes Talents to Birgmingham

STARTING LINE: The Tennessee State men's and women's track and field teams return to action in Birmingham, Alabama as it competes in the Samford Invitational Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13. The running events begin at 9 a.m. with field events to follow at 11 a.m.
 
ADMISSION: 900 fans are allowed inside the Birmingham CrossPlex with a $10 admission fee.

THE FIELD: The field for the event includes Alabama A&M, Birmingham Southern, Belhaven, Christian Brothers, Emmanuel (GA), Flagler, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Mississippi, Mobile, Piedmont, Samford, SEMO, Southeastern, TSU, UAB, William Care and Xavier Louisiana.

LAST TIME OUT: R'Lazon Brumfied leapt to a national ranking at ETSU's Buccaneer Invite. His triple jump of 15.81m moved him into the 13th spot in the nation. The Tigerbelles and Flying Tigers walked away with five first-place finishes over the course of the weekend.
 
Big Blue continued its tradition of leading the pack in the 4x400-meter relay, placing first  with a time of 3:21.13. Segree, Brumfield, Thompson and Kiyontae Warren made up the winning quad.
 
Freshman Janiyah Townsend was the standout Tigerbelle as the Orlando native placed first in the 60-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash. Two additional newcomers placed in their respective events - Elaina Housworth first in the triple jump recording a 11.48m leap and Bailey Smith third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.14. Veteran Alysoune Coleman earned third in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 59.1

UP NEXT: With the cancellation of the OVC Indoor Championship, the Tigers look to send a few athletes to the NCAA Indoors. Outdoor season begins March 19 at UCF.
