NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The unofficial start to the indoor track and field season for Tennessee State saw Blue defeat White in a landslide victory in the Blue & White Meet at the Gentry Center on Thursday.
For TSU Director of Track and Field Chandra Cheeseborough-Guice, it was a chance to get a first look at her teams before the season opens with the Music City Challenge at Vanderbilt on March 5.
"The Blue & White Meet turned out really well," Cheeseborough-Guice said. "We're excited about where we're headed with the men's and women's teams. Staying healthy is going to be a key and if we can do that, I think we're going to put up good numbers and we're headed in a good direction.
In the intersquad competition on Thursday, the blue team won 15 of the 21 individual events.
On the women's side, the blue squad dominated the field events with Gabrielle Younginer (McDonough, Ga.) winning the long jump and Amber Townsend (Atlanta, Ga.) taking first in the triple jump. Also representing blue, Angel Davis (Decateur, Ga.) captured first in the shot put and weight throw.
Amber Hughes (Atlanta, Ga.), a member of the blue team, crossed the finish line first in the 55m hurdles as well as the 300m, while Raven Davis (Junction City, Kan.) was a winner for blue in the 55m.
On the men's side, Quamel Prince (Nashville, Tenn.) added victories for the blue squad by capturing first in the 300m and 500m. Also picking up wins for blue on the track were Malik Wright (Tampa, Fla.) in the 55m and Jerome Henderson III (Clarksville, Tenn.) in the 150m.
In men's field events, the blue team's Charles Gooden (Memphis, Tenn.) was a winner in the shot put and weight throw.
For the white squad, Kareem Nicholas (Atlanta, Ga.) posted wins in the triple and long jump in the field events. Jemarruse Amos (Jacksonville, Fla.) finished first in the 55m hurdles, and Christian Prior (Detroit, Mich.) was the top finisher in the 600m.
The other two wins for the white team came thanks to Crystal Williams (Gainesville, Fla.) in the 150m and Clairwin Dameus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) in the 500m.
