Throughout the summer months leading up to the Tennessee State University Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet on Aug. 27, Tennessee State Athletics will highlight the members of the Hall of Fame Class of 2026. This distinguished group of former student-athletes, coaches, administrators and contributors helped shape the proud tradition of Tiger athletics through championship performances, individual achievements and lasting contributions to the university. Their stories reflect the excellence, perseverance and impact that have defined Tennessee State Athletics across generations.
William "Bill" Thomas | Posthumous Athletic Director | 1984-94
William "Bill" Thomas devoted his career to the success of Tennessee State University Athletics as a coach, mentor and administrator, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to shape the program today. A longtime assistant under legendary coach John Merritt, Thomas was elevated to head football coach in 1984 and immediately guided the Tigers to an undefeated 11-0 season. During his five-year tenure from 1984-88, he compiled a 34-20-3 record and led Tennessee State to multiple successful campaigns, including a 10-2-1 season and a berth in the second round of the NCAA Division I-AA Playoffs. Known for his leadership and commitment to student-athlete development, Thomas coached and mentored numerous future leaders in the profession, including future Tennessee State head football coach Rod Reed. In 1986, Thomas assumed the additional role of Director of Athletics, serving in that capacity until 1994 and helping guide the department through one of its most successful periods. As athletic director, he hired Teresa Phillips as head women's basketball coach, a decision that helped launch one of the most accomplished coaching careers in Tennessee State history. Under his administrative leadership, Tennessee State men's basketball captured Ohio Valley Conference championships and earned NCAA Tournament appearances in 1993 and 1994, while the department continued to strengthen its reputation for competitive excellence. Thomas' contributions as both a championship-winning coach and visionary administrator played a vital role in the growth and success of Tennessee State Athletics.
