Throughout the summer months leading up to the Tennessee State University Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet on Aug. 27, Tennessee State Athletics will highlight the members of the Hall of Fame Class of 2026. This distinguished group of former student-athletes, coaches, administrators and contributors helped shape the proud tradition of Tiger athletics through championship performances, individual achievements and lasting contributions to the university. Their stories reflect the excellence, perseverance and impact that have defined Tennessee State Athletics across generations.
Dominique Ward-Johnson | Women's Track & Field | 2005-08
Dominique Ward-Johnson ranks among the most decorated track and field athletes in Tennessee State University history, establishing herself as one of the premier sprinters in the Ohio Valley Conference during her remarkable career. A dominant performer from the moment she arrived on campus, Ward-Johnson earned OVC Freshman of the Year honors in 2005 before becoming a two-time OVC Indoor Athlete of the Year (2007, 2008) and the 2008 OVC Outdoor Athlete of the Year. She was also named OVC Indoor Championship MVP in both 2007 and 2008 and earned OVC Outdoor Athlete of the Championship honors in 2007. Ward-Johnson's dominance at the conference level was highlighted by multiple OVC individual championships, including titles in the 55-meter dash, 200 meters and 400 meters indoors, and conference crowns in the 200 meters and 400 meters outdoors. One of the few athletes in conference history to capture four gold medals at a single championship meet, she helped elevate Tennessee State's women's track and field program to sustained success while earning Tennessee State Female Athlete of the Year honors twice. Her performances remain among the finest in conference history, including OVC championship-winning times of 23.94 in the indoor 200 meters, 54.77 in the indoor 400 meters, and 52.25 in the outdoor 400 meters. Following her collegiate career, Ward-Johnson continued to compete at an elite level, qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials twice and earning a professional contract with Puma. Her extraordinary collection of conference awards, championship performances and success on the national stage cements her legacy as one of the greatest women's track and field athletes ever to represent Tennessee State University.
